Since “learning that one’s child has a life-threatening disease” was included as a qualifying event for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 1994), application of a trauma model for investigating parental responses to lifethreatening diseases of their children has become more prevalent (Stuber, Kazak, Meeske, & Barakat, 1998).
